Through his long association with Berghain, Marcel Dettmann is one of the few figures who have fundamentally defined a certain strand of modern techno. As the club’s resident DJ since it opened in 2004 (but beginning several years earlier in its former incarnation, Ostgut), he’s developed the high temple of techno’s raw, pulverising sound. He’s conducted high-voltage mayhem over more marathon weekend sessions than one can count, all the while looking uber composed as he despatches these relentless, pummelling waves of kick drum.
As a selector though, Dettmann is also known as someone who exceeds the sound template he’s helped set. A lover of everything from industrial noise to synth-punk, Dettmann can shift through all those gears with ease while maintaining the tempo and energy of the elemental techno he’s best known for. Marcel blew Boston Manor Park away when he played for us at the first Junction 2 in 2016, so we’re delighted to welcome him back for our fifth edition.
